FBR Extends Tax Return Deadline to October 31, 2026
FBR Extends Income Tax Return Filing Deadline to October 31, 2026
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 to October 31, providing taxpayers with an additional 16 days beyond the previously announced October 15 deadline.
The decision was announced on Thursday, October 15, following requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations seeking additional time for taxpayers to complete their returns.
According to the FBR's latest notification, the extension has been granted under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. The previous deadline had been extended from September 30 to October 15.
FBR Issues Fresh Deadline for Tax Year 2026
The latest extension applies to taxpayers whose
returns were originally due by September 30, 2026, and whose filing deadline had previously been extended to October 15.
The FBR issued the decision through Circular No. 04 of 2026-27. The board said the extension was granted in response to requests received from trade bodies and tax bar associations.
Taxpayers should use the additional time to complete their income declarations, review their financial information and submit the required documents through the FBR's online filing system.
Why Was the Deadline Extended?
Trade organisations and tax professionals had called for an extension, citing difficulties encountered during the filing process.
Reported concerns included delays in the availability of final income tax return forms and technical problems with the FBR's IRIS online portal. Tax professionals also raised concerns about system performance and the time required to complete returns.
The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry had also requested that the deadline be extended to October 31 to facilitate businesses, traders and other taxpayers.
The latest decision gives taxpayers additional time to address these difficulties and submit their returns.
More Than 6.7 Million Tax Returns Filed
The extension comes as the FBR continues to receive income tax returns for Tax Year 2026.
According to figures reported by Dawn, the number of returns received reached approximately 6.71 million by October 14, compared with 4.99 million during the corresponding period last year. This represents an increase of 34.38 per cent.
Tax paid with returns had reached Rs66.81 billion by October 14, compared with Rs58.29 billion during the same period last year, an increase of approximately 14.61 per cent.
Non-salaried individuals recorded a substantial rise in filings. Returns in this category, which includes traders, shopkeepers, professionals and self-employed individuals, increased to approximately 4.45 million from 3.04 million.
Returns filed by salaried individuals reached approximately 2.18 million, compared with 1.88 million during the corresponding period last year.
These figures indicate an increase in filing activity, although the number of returns submitted does not, by itself, establish how much additional tax revenue will ultimately be collected.
Who Should File Income Tax Returns?
The October 31 extension concerns the Tax Year 2026 filing deadline. Individuals and entities should determine their filing obligations according to the applicable tax rules and their circumstances.
Taxpayers who may need to review their filing requirements include:
- Salaried individuals whose income and circumstances require them to file.
- Business owners, traders and shopkeepers.
- Self-employed professionals and consultants.
- Individuals with income from property, investments or other taxable sources.
- Associations of persons and companies, subject to their applicable filing deadlines.
Not every person in these categories necessarily has identical tax obligations. Taxpayers should check the rules applicable to their particular circumstances rather than assume that employment status alone determines whether a return is required.
How to File an Income Tax Return
Taxpayers can access the FBR's official website and use the IRIS online system to submit their returns.
The general process is as follows:
- Sign in to the FBR's IRIS portal using the relevant account credentials.
- Review the income tax return and wealth statement requirements applicable to your circumstances.
- Enter the required income, expenses, tax deductions, assets and liabilities accurately.
- Reconcile the information with available salary certificates, bank records, withholding tax information and other supporting documents.
- Pay any tax due through the applicable payment process.
- Submit the return and verify that the filing has been completed successfully.
The exact documents and declarations required will depend on the taxpayer's circumstances. Anyone facing difficulties with the filing process may consult a qualified tax practitioner or contact the FBR for guidance.

Taxpayers Should Not Wait Until the Final Day
The revised deadline provides additional time, but taxpayers should not assume that another extension will be announced.
Those who have not yet filed should review their records, resolve any outstanding issues and submit their returns before October 31. Taxpayers who have already filed should retain their submission records and payment receipts for future reference.
The FBR's latest decision follows requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations and gives eligible taxpayers more time to complete the filing process.
