Asif Hasan Wins Pride of Britain Lifetime Achievement Award 2026

Pakistani-Origin Heart Surgeon Asif Hasan Wins Lifetime Achievement Award at Pride of Britain 2026

A Pakistani-origin heart surgeon, Asif Hasan, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards in recognition of more than three decades of dedicated service to children with complex heart conditions.

The award celebrates his remarkable contribution to paediatric cardiac surgery, heart transplantation and medical training in the United Kingdom. His career has helped transform the lives of thousands of children and their families.

More Than 4,000 Open-Heart Operations

Asif Hasan spent much of his career at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Appointed consultant cardiothoracic surgeon in 1995, he went on to lead the hospital's paediatric heart transplant programme.

According to Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, he performed more than 4,000 open-heart operations during his career, including approximately 3,000 as the lead surgeon.

His work extended beyond the operating theatre. He contributed to the development of specialist services for children with serious congenital heart conditions and helped establish Newcastle as an internationally recognised centre for paediatric heart surgery and transplantation.

Pioneering Work Gave Children More Hope

One of Hasan's important contributions was his work in paediatric heart transplantation and mechanical heart-support technology.

Children waiting for a suitable donor heart can face life-threatening complications. Mechanical support devices, including the Berlin Heart, can help keep patients alive while they wait for transplantation.

Hasan also helped develop surgical approaches that expanded treatment possibilities for children with complex heart conditions. These advances gave some of the most seriously ill young patients additional opportunities for treatment.

His career included approximately 400 heart transplants, according to his profile on the official Pride of Britain website.

An Emotional Reunion With 19 Former Patients

One of the most moving moments associated with the award was the reunion between Hasan and 19 former patients whose lives had been transformed by his work.

Their presence represented the lasting human impact of his career: children who once faced serious medical challenges had grown up and returned to celebrate the surgeon who had helped give them a future.

One of those patients was Seb Hollingsworth, who was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a serious congenital heart defect, shortly after birth in 2009.

Seb underwent life-saving open-heart surgery at just four months old under Hasan's care. He required another operation at the age of 13, and Hasan continued to support him through his treatment.

Seb's story illustrates how specialist heart surgery can affect not only a young patient but also the entire family.

Training the Next Generation of Heart Surgeons

Hasan's contribution did not end with the patients he treated personally. Throughout his career, he trained surgeons who went on to work as consultants in the UK and internationally.

He also contributed to overseas surgical training and charitable initiatives supporting children in disadvantaged communities, including work connected with Pakistan.

Training future specialists is particularly important in complex surgical fields, where experience, teamwork and technical knowledge are essential. By helping other surgeons develop their skills, Hasan created a legacy that can continue benefiting patients beyond his own retirement.

Why This Achievement Matters to Pakistan

For Pakistanis, Hasan's recognition is a source of inspiration. His career demonstrates how specialist medical expertise, dedication and collaboration can make a lasting difference across generations.

His story also highlights the importance of investing in medical education, developing specialist healthcare services and creating opportunities for experienced professionals to train the next generation.

Although he built much of his career in the British National Health Service, his involvement in overseas training and charitable medical work reflects the potential for medical knowledge to benefit communities beyond national borders.

A Lifetime of Service and a Lasting Legacy

Hasan retired from Freeman Hospital earlier in 2026 after decades of service. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises not just the number of operations he performed but also his contribution to medical innovation, patient care and the development of future surgeons.

His career offers an important reminder that the impact of a doctor can be measured in many ways: lives saved, families supported, knowledge shared and opportunities created for the next generation.

For the children who received treatment and the families who lived through uncertain and difficult moments, his work represents something deeply personal—the opportunity to look forward to a future that might otherwise have been out of reach.
